For four decades, Dr. Dawes Edwards has served as the cornerstone of orthodontic care in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He founded Edwards Orthodontics in 1984 and spent his entire career providing braces, Invisalign, and comprehensive orthodontic treatment to children, teens, and adults throughout the Orangeburg community and surrounding areas. As Orangeburg's only full-time orthodontist, Dr. Edwards built a practice defined by clinical precision, personal relationships, and a deep investment in the people he serves.

Education and Training

​

Dr. Edwards grew up in Johnston, South Carolina, and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Clemson University. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina, where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. After dental school, Dr. Edwards completed a General Practice Residency at MUSC before pursuing his specialty training at West Virginia University's Orthodontic Residency Program, where he earned his Master of Science degree and specialty certification in orthodontics.

Dr. Dawes Edwards returned to the Midlands after completing his training and opened Edwards Orthodontics on Wingate Street in Orangeburg in 1984. From that single location, he built a practice that has served thousands of patients over four decades. With approximately 80 percent of his patients being children, Dr. Edwards became a familiar and trusted presence for generations of Orangeburg families — many of whom returned with their own children years later.

Edwards Orthodontics earned recognition from the Orangeburg County Community of Character initiative for demonstrating respect — a reflection of the way Dr. Edwards and his team have always approached patient care. He has long believed that orthodontic treatment is about more than straightening teeth. Dr. Edwards has made it a point to use his time with young patients as an opportunity to encourage good values and build confidence that lasts well beyond the day the braces come off.

Community Involvement

Dr. Dawes Edwards has been as committed to the Orangeburg community as he has been to his patients. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Orangeburg, serves on the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Foundation Board, and is a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Edwards has invested his time in mentoring high school students and coaching basketball — further evidence of his dedication to the young people of the community.

Continuing the Tradition

Today, Dr. Justin Garrett carries forward the legacy that Dr. Edwards built at Edwards Orthodontics. As Edwards & Garrett Orthodontists, the practice continues to operate from the same Wingate Street location where Dr. Edwards opened his doors in 1984.
