Why Age 7 Matters for Your Child's First Orthodontic Check Up

Most parents assume orthodontics is something to think about once their child loses all their baby teeth, maybe around middle school. So it often comes as a surprise to hear that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child's first orthodontic visit happen by age 7. If that number feels early, you're not alone. Here's why it matters, and what that first visit actually involves.

Why Age 7?

By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, which gives us a clear enough picture to spot certain issues early, while there's still room to guide how the smile develops. At this stage, the jaw is still growing, which means some problems are easier to address now than they will be once growth has slowed down.

This doesn't mean every 7-year-old needs treatment. In fact, most don't. What it means is that this is the ideal window to catch things early, if there's anything to catch at all.

What We're Looking For

At an early evaluation, we're checking for things that are much harder to see on your own. That includes:

  • Crowding or spacing issues as permanent teeth come in

  • Bite problems, like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite

  • Jaw growth that isn't tracking evenly

  • Habits, like thumb sucking or mouth breathing, that could affect how the teeth and jaw develop

Catching these early doesn't always mean starting treatment right away. Sometimes it means simply keeping an eye on things as your child grows. Other times, early intervention can make later treatment shorter, simpler, or even prevent the need for more involved correction down the road.

What Happens at the First Visit

An early evaluation is simple and low-pressure. We'll take a look at your child's teeth, bite, and jaw development, answer any questions you have, and let you know exactly where things stand. If treatment isn't needed yet, your child will join Smile Scouts, our monitoring program for patients who aren't ready for treatment but still benefit from keeping an eye on things as they grow. If early treatment would be beneficial, we'll walk you through what that looks like and why.

There's no obligation and no pressure. The goal of this visit is information, not necessarily action.

What Is Smile Scouts?

Smile Scouts is our way of staying connected with patients between that first evaluation and whenever treatment might actually begin. Kids in the program come in periodically so we can track their growth and development, and along the way, they can earn fun prizes for showing up and staying on top of their smile. It turns what could feel like "wait and see" into something kids actually look forward to.

Setting Your Child Up for Success

Bringing your child in at age 7 isn't about starting treatment early for the sake of it. It's about giving them, and you, the clearest possible picture of what's ahead. Whether that means addressing something now, monitoring it over time, or simply confirming everything looks great, an early evaluation puts you ahead of the curve instead of catching something later that could have been simpler to manage early on.
